PROVIDING OUTSOURCED TECHNOLOGY, BUSINESS STRATEGY SERVICES, AND START-UP CAPITAL

innovation

“Innovation capitalists are firms, often with a particular industry expertise, that seek out and evaluate ideas and technologies from the inventor community… They develop and refine those ideas to the point where their market potential is validated, and they then pitch them to large client firms. An innovation capitalist reduces a client company’s acquisition costs and early-stage risks. In return, it shares in the proceeds from the innovation.”

-“Meet the Innovation Capitalists,” Harvard Business Review, March 2007

Gordon Herman
Managing Partner Arizona Bay Technology Ventures

Gord started off his career in the mid 80’s as an investment analyst and eventually Investment Banking specializing in mergers and acquisitions. In the later 80’s to mid 90’s he moved into the operations and administration side of business assuming various roles in larger Canadian corporations including Shell oil and General Electric Capital where he finished as President of General Electric Capital Leasing Inc (which at the time incorporated all of GE Capital Canada’s assets). He was promoted to Executive VP of a large GE capital US based company but opted to pursue an entrepreneurial opportunity in Canada. He acquired a 30 year old business with flat sales and declining margins and dramatically turned it around in 3 years to a robust solid growth company (in excess of 20% each year) with strong margins; later selling the company for a $2.5 mm (cdn) profit. Over the next few years Gord acquired a series of about 10 companies (employing over 1000 people) some of which he still holds interest in or were sold for a profit. In 2002 Gord was hired on as CEO of a public company high tech incubator. The company had approximately 12 various stage projects along with approximately about 300 employees. Gord’s role was to oversee and milestone each phase of the 12 projects from concept to revenue proofing and eventually self sustainability. However, it became clear early on that funding had dried up for high tech and his role then quickly shifted into winding the Projects and parent company down. In September of 2002 Gord became President and CEO of Neteller, a private money transfer service company. Then the company had approximately 20 employees and $2mm in Revenue. Under his direction as CEO, the company grew with Net Income of close to $100 mm in 2005. Gord is still active as chairman of the company. Mr Herman received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Brigham Young University in 1980 and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame in 1984.
